Exposure to Asbestos in the Molding ProcessExposure to asbestos-containing plastic molding compound occurred in a variety of trades and professions. Prior to the mid-1980's, plastic molding compound contained asbestos as a filler material because it added strength and heat resistance to a variety of molded products. Other filler materials, such as wood flour and cloth, served the same purpose, but asbestos was a cheaper alternative. Exposure to asbestos can cause mesothelioma and lung cancer. Truck drivers, molders, finishers, and even electricians were exposed to asbestos, through a variety of processes, from delivery of plastic molding compound to the production and manipulation of the finished product. Workers who did not have direct contact with asbestos-containing plastic molding compound, but worked in an area where it was manufactured or molded, are at risk for developing mesothelioma or lung cancer. |
